LotusSphere Comes to You and IBM SWG Conferences

This is my first blog on developerWorks India blog space and thought let me start with sharing some information about a marketing event called "Lotussphere Comes to You".

Some background for those who do not know what LotusSphere is all about - a quick summary in my own words :

IBM software Group has 5 brands - WebSphere, Information Management, Lotus, Tivoli and Rational.

Each of these brands have their grand "marketing event of the year" that typically happens in one of the event friendly cities (Orlando / Las Vegas) in U.S.
  1. WebSphere brand runs the Smart SOA flag and the "IMPACT" conference is happening in May in Vegas
  2. Rational event is called "Rational Software Development Conference" and the 2009 event schedule is yet to be announced.
  3. Tivoli's Pulse 2009 (a Tivoli Technical User Conference) got over on 12th Feb last week.
  4. The Information Management calls it "IOD - Information on Demand" Conference and it is happening in October in 2009.
  5. Finally for Lotus - "LotusSphere" is the event and it was held in Orlando in January 2009.

Echo / Flavor (or whatever you may choose to call it) of almost each of these events happens locally within the country- to convey the message to market about the new offerings/announcements that happened at the Global event.

Lotus is running the "LotusSphere Comes to You" in three metros in 2009 and this is happening next week... my blog comes too late for those who really intend to attend and apologies for the same... but for those who read this and make for this event, please do attend it and provide me the feedback on my blog. I and my colleague Aryender Sharma who leads the Lotus Lab Services brand will be present at the event in Mumbai on Tuesday and hope to interact with customers, partners and most importantly developers.. :-)

17 February - Hotel Grand Hyatt, Mumbai
18 February - Hotel Taj Mahal, Delhi
20 February - Hotel Taj Residency, Bangalore

IBM DB2 pureXML with Industry Standards

Industry standards are key to success of many global market players. An industry standard is a specification of the protocol being adopted by each industry for communication and information exchange. Just as we have networking standards like FTP, TCP/IP and HTTP for information exchange over the wire, there are industry standards for each segment of the industry. For e.g. HL7 is a very popular industry standard in the healthcare segment. Similarly, we have XBRL which is widely used in the financial sector for reporting. Several advantages having a standard and adhering to them are
  • Gives more visibility to the compliant organization as it is now part of a larger pool of organizations that have adherence to such a standard
  • Gives more credibility to the compliant organization because adherence to the standard demonstrates the fact the organization has a well defined and universally accepted protocol for communication and information exchange
  • Makes the entire process of communication and information exchange quicker and easier

So, how is IBM's DB2 pureXML related with these standards?
Well, as we know that DB2 pureXML technology has strong XML Schema support and all these industry standards have their specification as XML schema documents. The size and the number of these schema documents can vary with a given industry standard.
DB2 pureXML has the ability to not only register these complex industry standard schema documents but also to validate a given incoming XML document against these registered XML schema documents. Thus, this will ensure that your DB2 database never has any documents which comply with the given industry standard.

Here is a small video which discusses these industry standards and how pureXML can help implement these standards within your organization.

developerWorks Author Achievement Recognition Program : Just for you

First of all, thanks to Apra for this wonderful intiative of a blog for the developerWorks community. Its a nice platform for the members of IBM dW community to share their views, ideas , likes and dislikes about dW and related topics.
Often enough in my discussions with customers/partners and the developer community I get asked about where can we find the relevant information about the various IBM products and technology and everytime my answer has been and continues to be the developerWorks (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/) website.
The IBM developerWorks website is made up of the developer community and is for the developer community. Anyone who works on any of the IBM products or technologies and is willing to share their technical excellence or piece of work which they think is useful for the larger developer community is welcome to do so by publishing an article on developerWorks.
If you think that there is some piece of information missing which needs to be there on the website for e.g. things like

  • how to do install/configure/integrate a particular product
  • how to write a particular program using a particular IDE
  • what are the best practices for a given technology
  • tips on performance and benchmarking.
Pretty much everything that you feel would benefit the developer community can be made into an article.
Now, the next obvious question that comes to our mind is "What is in it for me?"
Well, by publishing a developerWorks article, you are not only contributing to the developer community but you are also increasing your visibility in the community.
The introduction of dW Author Achievement Recognition Program does just that.
You can read more details about this progam here : http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/aboutdw/dwa/index.html
